DOG'S CAVE

This was on the banks of the lake. Inside, poisonous fumes exhaled from ground level to a height of 30 centimetres. A popular experiment during the period of the “Grand Tour” consisted in introducing a dog into the cave, which after only a few moments fell into a fainting fit due to breathing the poisonous air, this resulted lethal if the poor beast wasn’t immediately pulled out into the open air.
